    Preliminary power train design for a state-of-the-art electric vehicle

    The state-of-the-art (SOTA) of electric vehicles built since 1965 was reviewed to establish a base for the preliminary design of a power train for a SOTA electric vehicle. The performance of existing electric vehicles were evaluated to establish preliminary specifications for a power train design using state-of-the-art technology and commercially available components. Power train components were evaluated and selected using a computer simulation of the SAE J227a Schedule D driving cycle. Predicted range was determined for a number of motor and controller combinations in conjunction with the mechanical elements of power trains and a battery pack of sixteen lead-acid batteries - 471.7 kg at 0.093 MJ/Kg (1040 lbs. at 11.7 Whr/lb). On the basis of maximum range and overall system efficiency using the Schedule D cycle, an induction motor and 3 phase inverter/controller was selected as the optimum combination when used with a two-speed transaxle and steel belted radial tires. The predicted Schedule D range is 90.4 km (56.2 mi). Four near term improvements to the SOTA were identified, evaluated, and predicted to increase range approximately 7%

    A Project Based Approach to Statistics and Data Science

    In an increasingly data-driven world, facility with statistics is more important than ever for our students. At institutions without a statistician, it often falls to the mathematics faculty to teach statistics courses. This paper presents a model that a mathematician asked to teach statistics can follow. This model entails connecting with faculty from numerous departments on campus to develop a list of topics, building a repository of real-world datasets from these faculty, and creating projects where students interface with these datasets to write lab reports aimed at consumers of statistics in other disciplines. The end result is students who are well prepared for interdisciplinary research, who are accustomed to coping with the idiosyncrasies of real data, and who have sharpened their technical writing and speaking skills

    Mutational analysis of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B

    Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA) is a classical cytoplasmic glycolytic enzyme which, despite lacking a predicted signal peptide, has been demonstrated to be expressed and transported to the surface of numerous Gram-positive bacteria and shown to interact with host molecules and perform non-glycolytic biological functions. Genome-based studies have also demonstrated that the glycolytic pathway appears to be non-functional in the meningococcus due to absence of phosphofructokinase, one of the important enzymes in this pathway. This study aimed to investigate whether the FBA, a so-called housekeeping enzyme, is required for maximal in vitro growth of N. meningitidis. An FBA knock-out mutant was created in N. meningitidis using an inverse polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and allelic exchange methodology. Phenotypic analysis of FBA-deficient mutant strains such as growth profiling experiments showed that the FBA-deficient mutant grew at the same rate (in broth culture and on solid media) as the wild-type strain, suggesting that FBA is not required for optimal growth of N. meningitidis under the in vitro conditions tested. No differences in either colony or bacterial cell morphology (using light microscopy) were observed. In summary, despite being a central enzyme in the glycolytic cycle, FBA is not required for in vitro growth of N. meningitidis.Key words: Neisseria meningitidis, aldolase, mutagenesis, growth kinetics, glycolytic cycle

    Uptake of Neisserial autotransporter lipoprotein (NalP) promotes an increase in human brain microvascular endothelial cell metabolic activity

    Neisseria meningitidis is normally a human nasopharyngeal commensal but is also capable of causing lifethreatening sepsis and meningitis. N. meningitidis secretes several virulence-associated proteins including Neisserial autotransporter lipoprotein (NalP), an immunogenic, type Va autotransporter harboring an S8-family serine endopeptidase domain. NalP has been previously characterized as a cell-surface maturation protease which processes other virulence-associated meningococcal surface proteins, and as a factor contributing to the survival of meningococci in human serum due to its ability to cleave complement factor C3. Here, recombinant NalP (rNalP) fragments were purified and used to investigate the interaction of NalP with host cells. Flow cytometry and confocal microscopy demonstrated binding and uptake of rNalP into different human cell types. High-resolution microscopy confirmed that internalized rNalP predominantly localized to the perinuclear region of cells. Abolition of rNalP protease activity using site-directed mutagenesis did not influence uptake or subcellular localization, but inactive rNalP (rNalPS426A) was unable to induce an increase in human brain microvascular endothelial cell metabolic activity provoked by proteolytically-active rNalP. Our data suggests a more complex and multifaceted role for NalP in meningococcal pathogenesis than was previously understood which includes novel intra-host cell functions

    Internationalisation, cultural distance and country characteristics: a Bayesian analysis of SME's financial performance

    Relying on the accounting data of a panel of 403 Italian manufacturing SMEs collected over a period of 5 years, we find results suggesting that multinationality per se does not impact on the economic performance of international small and medium sized firms. It is the characteristics of the country selected i.e. the political hazard, the financial stability and the economic performance that significantly influence SMEs financial performance. The management implication for small and medium sized firms selecting and entering new geographic markets is significant, since our results show that for SMEs it is the market selection process that really matters and not the degree of multinationality

    Global and regional effects of the photochemistry of CH_3O_2NO_2: evidence from ARCTAS

    Using measurements from the NASA Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS) experiment, we show that methyl peroxy nitrate (CH_3O_2NO_2) is present in concentrations of ~5–15 pptv in the springtime arctic upper troposphere. We investigate the regional and global effects of CH_3O_2NO_2 by including its chemistry in the GEOS-Chem 3-D global chemical transport model. We find that at temperatures below 240 K inclusion of CH_3O_2NO_2 chemistry results in decreases of up to ~20 % in NO_x, ~20 % in N_2O_5, ~5 % in HNO3, ~2 % in ozone, and increases in methyl hydrogen peroxide of up to ~14 %. Larger changes are observed in biomass burning plumes lofted to high altitude. Additionally, by sequestering NO_x at low temperatures, CH_3O_2NO_2 decreases the cycling of HO_2 to OH, resulting in a larger upper tropospheric HO_2 to OH ratio. These results may impact some estimates of lightning NO_x sources as well as help explain differences between models and measurements of upper tropospheric composition

    A Fibred Tableau Calculus for Modal Logics of Agents

    In previous works we showed how to combine propositional multimodal logics using Gabbay's \emph{fibring} methodology. In this paper we extend the above mentioned works by providing a tableau-based proof technique for the combined/fibred logics. To achieve this end we first make a comparison between two types of tableau proof systems, (\emph{graph} &\& \emph{path}), with the help of a scenario (The Friend's Puzzle). Having done that we show how to uniformly construct a tableau calculus for the combined logic using Governatori's labelled tableau system \KEM. We conclude with a discussion on \KEM's features

    Nonparametric instrumental regression with non-convex constraints

    This paper considers the nonparametric regression model with an additive error that is dependent on the explanatory variables. As is common in empirical studies in epidemiology and economics, it also supposes that valid instrumental variables are observed. A classical example in microeconomics considers the consumer demand function as a function of the price of goods and the income, both variables often considered as endogenous. In this framework, the economic theory also imposes shape restrictions on the demand function, like integrability conditions. Motivated by this illustration in microeconomics, we study an estimator of a nonparametric constrained regression function using instrumental variables by means of Tikhonov regularization. We derive rates of convergence for the regularized model both in a deterministic and stochastic setting under the assumption that the true regression function satisfies a projected source condition including, because of the non-convexity of the imposed constraints, an additional smallness condition
